Snow Storm - Daily Photo 10/365

Around midnight last night a snowstorm moved in from the south dumping a lot of snow on the mid-state region.  I grew up in the midwest so I know what a "real" snowstorm looks like but having now lived in the south for more than 20 years I've learned that the definition of snowstorm is relative to the region.

My sister-in-law in middle Nebraska posted on FB Saturday night that they'd just gotten 9" of snow and it was still coming down.  Even for them that's a lot of snow at one time, but there the people and Dept of Transportation (DOT) are equipped to deal with it and keep on with life.

Last night here at our house we got about 3" but further south in the state they got 10.5"!  Big deal?  Very big deal.  What you may not know is that when a snow fall (not necessarily storm) is predicted here the grocery stores sell out of all the staples and the school closings begin.  DOT does the best it can but preparing the streets & interstates for the snow then clearing & keeping them clear is an overwhelming task.  Then there's the thawing during the day from the a combination of traffic and warmer temperatures that make it even more interesting because by the time evening rush hour begins the temperature has begun to drop again so ice starts forming.  Snow & ice isn't a good combination on the roads.

The scariest thing to me is that the people who grew up here didn't grow up learning how to drive in these conditions so a lot of stupid mistakes are made which cause accidents, some minor some not, traffic delays and frustration.

Enough.  On to the photo of the day.  The thought of waking up to a few inches of snow this morning was exciting to the photographer in me.  Mid-morning I bundled up and went outside to capture the beauty of all the white stuff.  The snow is still coming down - flurries more than anything - which means that the sky is overcast.  A bright sunny sky would make for prettier pictures but I have to work with what God provides.

Perhaps the sun will come out this afternoon so I'll have another opportunity for pictures but for now here is what I have.  Today we get three for the price of one.
